Role in the Story

Phil Coulson, an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., is Nick Fury's right-hand man. He also gives players hints during the game.

History

Phil Coulson served as a ranger in the fight against terrorism in Afghanistan until his best friend, Marcus Johnson, learned that he was the son of Nick Fury, Sr., a renowned World War II veteran and the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. When both the elder and younger Nick Furys were threatened by the terrorist Orion, leader of the evil organization Leviathan, Coulson helped them in the fight against the forces of Leviathan, which included Taskmaster. With the ultimate defeat of Orion and Marcus Johnson's acceptance of his true identity as Nick Fury, Jr., Coulson and Fury, Jr., became high-ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, while Nick, Sr., stepped down as director.

Abilities

  • Destroyer Gun: Phil Coulson carries an energy cannon created to combat the likes of The Destroyer but can use it to obliterate lesser threats as well.
  • Invisibility: Phil Coulson can use a S.H.I.E.L.D. device to turn himself invisible.
  • Computer Hacking: Phil Coulson can hack into advanced computers.

Appearance

Phil Coulson has brown hair, a gray shirt, a black tie, a black shirt, a black belt, and black pants.

Trivia

  • Phil Coulson was confirmed to be in the game at San Diego Comic-Con 2013.
  • Clark Gregg, who voices this character, has also portrayed him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series of films and voices him in Ultimate Spider-Man.
  • The weapon Coulson uses is the same one portrayed in The Avengers and the Agents of SHIELD television series.
  • In Phil's idle animation he brings out a trading card with Captain America on it, This is a reference to The Avengers when he asked Steve to sign them but he declined. After Coulson dies, Fury give the cards that are splattered with blood to Steve saying he wanted him to sign them.
  • Coulson's inclusion in the game is a little off-canon as in the Marvel Cinematic Universe only high ranking (level 7 and above) agents of SHIELD, and Lady Sif due to a crossover episode, know he's alive and this information has deliberately been kept from the Avengers. The circumstances of Coulson's return to life have yet to be fully explained and act as an ongoing plot point for the Agents of SHIELD television series.
